Sleep Disorders

What are sleep disorders?

Sleep disorders disrupt your sleep patterns and affect your ability to feel fully rested. While everybody experiences interrupted sleep at some point — often due to stress, too much caffeine, indigestion, etc. — a sleep disorder impacts your overall health. Too much or too little sleep over an extended period can make activities like driving or exercising dangerous.

What are the signs of sleep disorders?

Sleep disorder symptoms vary, but some of the most common signs that you’re not getting a full night of sleep include:

  • Daytime fatigue
  • Feeling tired after eight hours of sleep
  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Restless sleep
  • Loud snoring
  • Mood swings
  • Forgetfulness
  • Falling asleep suddenly
  • Urge to move while sleeping

Falling asleep at inappropriate times, such as while driving, is an especially concerning sign of a sleep disorder.

Are there different types of sleep disorders?

There are many types of sleep disorders, however, the most common are:

Sleep apnea

Breathing starts and stops repeatedly throughout the night with sleep apnea. This happens for several reasons. If you have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), your throat muscles relax and block your airways, making it difficult to breathe. Central sleep apnea means your brain isn’t properly signaling to the muscles that control your breathing.

Insomnia

Insomnia is a disorder that makes it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep. Short bouts of insomnia are common, but insomnia that lasts for more than a few days can have a detrimental effect on your long-term health.

Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is a potentially dangerous sleep disorder that can make you fall asleep suddenly, often at inappropriate times. It causes excessive daytime sleepiness that is often hard to control.

Restless leg syndrome (RLS)

Restless leg syndrome creates an uncomfortable sensation in your legs that urges you to move them while sleeping. Not only does RLS make it difficult to fall asleep, but it can also wake you up in the middle of the night.

It’s important to sleep for at least seven to nine hours a night for your mental and physical health. Sleep deprivation leads to an array of serious health problems, including trouble concentrating, memory problems, poor immunity, forgetfulness, and even depression.

How Arizona Neurology Care treats your sleep disorder depends on the type you have and the symptoms you experience. The team may recommend a combination of medication and lifestyle modifications, including avoiding caffeine, exercising, and reducing stress.
